Carlene Miller Hurst
About me:
Carlene Miller Hurst 48 years old (I don't get it when people are
embarrassed by their age)
Grew up in Nashville and Smithville, Tennessee.
Lived in Murfreesboro since 1982 (So I'm calling myself a native!)
Education: MTSU, Interior Design
Career: I've enjoyed the best of both worlds being a stay at home Mom
who also does Interior Decorating for new construction homes and
existing ones.
We were in the construction business for 18 years so I love new home
design, but I have a lot of clients who want to just update their homes.
Family: Husband Hughes, daughters Meredith, 22 graduated from UT
Knoxville, Interior Design (She's living and working in Atlanta!),
Victoria, 17 a Senior at Siegel High School and dual enrolled at MTSU
this year. She hasn't decided where she's going to college, but it has
been exciting looking at all of the possibilities!
Some of my favorite books: As a child I loved "Are You My Mother?" and
"Big Ball of String". "Charlotte's Web" is a favorite. As a "grown up" I
truly love "The Secret Life of Bees", all of the Mitford series, I also
adore reading cookbooks. This summer I enjoyed reading "The Jewish
Table". I usually have at least three books on my nightstand that I am
actively reading.
Hobbies: Reading , (of course), flower and herb gardening, cooking,
riding my bicycle, tennis, photography, and of course having coffee or
lunch with my friends.
On a rainy day you're most likely to find me at Linebaugh or in a bookstore.
Pets: 2 cats and 1 golden retriever
Church and Community Involvement: St Mark's United Methodist, in
addition to Sunday School and Sunday worship, I enjoy an outstanding
women's bible study group on Thursday mornings. I'm also involved in Siegel High School PTO.
In the past, I've been very active in Junior League, Vanderbilt's
Children Hospital, Middle Tennessee Medical Center's Auxiliary,
and Oakland's Historic Mansion
Why I'm involved in Read To Succeed: My mother was an elementary school
teacher and was one of those wonderful teachers who loved her job!
When I was young, she read with me every night and instilled the love
and importance of reading. Years later I was working at an after school
job in a corner drug store soda fountain (Think Mayberry) I was exposed
to some elderly adults who couldn't write their names or read. They
were wonderful men and women who were smart, worked hard and raised
families, but simply didn't stay in school long enough to master reading
and writing.
As a mother, I loved reading to my daughters when they were little. One
day I was in Linebaugh Library and saw two adults reading together and
I could tell that one of them was being tutored. Last year, after
seeing an ad in the newspaper I participated in the training classes to
tutor adult learners. I met Ronni Shaw and was captivated by her energy
and enthusiasm. I told her I wanted to become more active in RTS. She
suggested I come to a One Book meeting, and that began my adventure! I'm
also going to participate in the training for Imagination Station.
RTS definitely makes a positive difference in people's lives. When we
help others make their lives better our entire community benefits!
