Would you like to get involved with family literacy in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County
?

 

Read To Succeed, a community based literacy initiative, is in need of individuals, business groups, civic organizations, and social clubs who are interested in serving the community.

DATED VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

  • June 20 - August 10
    Books on Boardwalk
    Time: ongoing

    Event Assistant
    - Help to put together books and set up the "pages" along the boardwalk.

  • July 15, 2008
    Pre-K registration
    Bellwood Preschool
    Time: TBA

    Community Booth: Distribute RTS information and materials, sign up parents/children for library cards.

  • July 25 - September 5 (Fridays)
    Adult ESL Classes
    Lon Nuell Literacy Center
    Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

    Children's Coordinator to work with children of Hispanic parents while they are attending and ESL class.


  • August 5, 2008
    National Night Out
    Franklin Heights & other sites
    Time: 5:00

    Activities coordinator and helpers: Set up fun reading activities for residents to participate in during national night out.

    Volunteer Readers
    needed to help read at each site.

    Event Assistant: Distribute RTS balloons and sticker to sites.

  • August 9, 2008
    Team RTS
    Time: TBA

    Runners to represent Read To Succeed in the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Runs with Scissors 5k run. runners will need to pay their own entry fee and wear a purple or yellow shirt.

    Volunteers also needled to cheer and support Team RTS runners.

    Back To School Celebration
    Time: 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

    Booth volunteers: Help with activity at RTS tent and distribute RTS materials.

    Event assistance: Help with set up and tear down.

    Reading in the Schools Day


    Before Sept. 26: Stuffing coordinator packets and getting information to schools.

    Day of event: Readers to read to children in classroom.

    After: Reading in the Schools Day evaluation summary (tally of evaluations to get ready for reporting).

    Reading Rally Events

    Smyrna Library, LaVergne Library and Linebaugh Library
    Time: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

    Event set up and tear down.
    Floaters: To work as needed during the event.

    Readers: Read to children during event.

    Activities assistants: To help with crafts and children's activities during event.

ON-GOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Adult Literacy Tutor - Interested in being a Volunteer Tutor for an adult learner, please contact Pidge Cash or complete the online volunteer application.

  • Adult Literacy Program Training Assistant - help with preparing copies and materials for tutor training, get supplies and refreshments together for each training session, follow up with perspective tutors to attend the training. If interested in volunteering, contact Karen Claud.

  • Backpack Project Coordinator - This program provides free backpacks and book bags filled with books and school supplies to needy children in Rutherford County. The coordinator would be responsible for securing a group of volunteers to help gather materials (backpacks, book bags, school supplies and books), put the materials together, and deliver to designated agencies.

  • Data Entry -Trained to input data into "LACES" data management system. Help keep Adult Literacy Tutoring reports, volunteer information and other data up to date on the computer.


  • Office Assistance - Work one day a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) anytime between hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. doing general clerical and office work as needed by RTS staff.

  • Rockin' Readers - Coordinate volunteer readers to read to residents in nursing home facilities.
