Jean Bettencourt
Jean contacted our organization around this time of year, two years ago, with an interest in volunteering as a tutor with the Adult Literacy Program. Jean knew the value of literacy, education and non-profit programs through her many years of experience in teaching and education field. Jean has a master’s degree in education, taught elementary school for 15 years and then moved into working with adults and families through programs at a technical college, community adult literacy program and through national Even Start and Exchange Club programs, which also included the unique experience of working with inmates in a penitentiary. When Jean was asked what she enjoyed most about volunteering, she happily replied, “It fills a need to be of service to the community.” She also enjoys the flexibility of volunteering, giving her the balance of connecting to the community, but still having time to spend with family and friends. “Literacy Matters” to Jean because she feels that it is “empowering for individuals; it gives people access to information and the ability to discern important information to make better choices and live healthier and more productive lives.” Jean, we thank you for empowering Read To Succeed with your many contributions to our organization, your continued support and assistance with the Adult Literacy Program and your care and compassion for those in need.
