Read To Succeed named 2009 Award for Excellence winner: The Tennessee Literacy Coalition's
annual Award for Excellence was presented to Read To Succeed for the Families That Read, Succeed Program. Read To Succeed was selected from a group of highly deserving applicants. The focus of "Families That Read, Succeed" is improving and strengthing the literacy skills of parents by engaging them in a reading program that emphasizes collaborative reading with one's child or children. The goal of the program is for parents to gain valuable insight into literacy methodologies, as well as implementation strategies that will enable them to forge long-lasting reading relationships with their child or children. The program includes a separate adult-focused component where parents will have the opportunity to learn, discuss, and compare literacy strategies, deficiencies, and goals with a moderator trained to help generate appropriate responses. In addition, parents committed to "Families That Read, Succeed" have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with trained adult literacy tutors. The program was offered at three sites in Murfreesboro, partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County, Project HELP, and volunteer students from MTSU. This is the second time that Read To Succeed has been selected for this Award.
