Read To Succeed

Become A Tutor

Read To Succeed’s Adult Literacy Program needs volunteers to teach ESL/ELL (English Second Language, English Language Learner)
and ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes for adult learners!

• Classes meet virtually and in-person
• Volunteers must be able to commit on average 2-4 hours/week
• Teaching experience, ESL experience, and knowledge of a second language are not required
• RTS offers a two-part training course that provides you with all the necessary tools to teach an online ESL class and tutor ABE learners

You must already have attended a tutor/teacher training session with us prior to attending Professional Development.

Adult Literacy Tutoring

The Adult Literacy Program works with adults 18 years of age and older to provide tutoring at no cost to the learner or tutor. The program provides a free training course to teach volunteer tutors how to work with adults. Once enrolled, tutors will be required to submit a monthly report. Throughout the year, in-service training is offered to the tutors at no cost. In addition, the program provides the basic literacy materials needed for the tutoring process.

Adult Basic Education

The tutors are paired one-on-one with adult learners based on the tutors’ interests (basic, intermediate, advanced reading, math, or English as a Second Language). As a Read To Succeed Adult Literacy tutor, you will meet 1 – 2 times a week for an hour or two each time with your designated learner. You will meet at a mutually convenient public place or virtually.

ESL/ELL Instruction

Read To Succeed offers several ESL/ELL classes throughout the county for adults seeking to improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. Locations are available in Murfreesboro and online through Zoom. Classes are open to new students in August/September. Tutors will meet with students in a class setting and work in small groups. Classes meet for 1-2 hours twice a week.
